| The New Change of the Century Orchestra featuring Sunny Murray |
As
part of the documentary feature Sunny’s time now
(dir. Antoine Prum), the City of Dudelange proudly presents a 4-day musicians-in-residence
program that gives US drummer and Free jazz legend Sunny Murray carte
blanche to convoke a one-off orchestra for a series of open-access rehearsals
and an exclusive concert. Wishing to inscribe this unique experience within
the tradition of his performances, Sunny Murray has decided to reactivate
The Change of the Century Orchestra, a band with a changing formation
dedicated to playing a repertoire honoring the memories of John Coltrane
and Duke Ellington as well as original music by Sunny Murray. Featuring
an exciting mixture of early Free jazz legends and younger musicians,
The New Change of the Century Orchestra provides a unique occasion to
assess the history and heritage of avant-garde jazz and witness some of
its fiercest defenders still in action. The musicians invited by Sunny Murray to join The New Change of the Century Orchestra in Dudelange are: Tony BEVAN, bass, tenor & soprano saxophones; John EDWARDS, double bass; Bobby FEW, piano; Henry GRIMES, double bass, violin; Khan JAMAL, vibraphone, marimba; Sabir MATEEN, tenor & alt saxophones; Grachan MONCUR III, trombone; Odean POPE, tenor sax, flute, oboe, bass clarinet; Richard RAUX, tenor & soprano saxophones, flute; Sonny SIMMONS, alt saxophone, English horn; Monnette SUDLER, guitar. |
| The
concert will be recorded for a CD release on US label EREMITE. |
